Hi. Better late then never... ;-)

What exactly should a "cd repair kit" be?

Afaik there is no way to restore the damaged data... If the CD has scratches test it with EAC (mark all, hit F8). If there are no errors make a safety copy (in Flac and upload it here ;-) ) If there are errors let her rest in peace.

Maybe i´m wrong, but i do not think that there is a way to repair a CD.

The usual disc-repair-kit is a machine that grinds the surface of the disc and reduces the deep scratches, so the laser can reach the data again.
After this the disc has many little scratches but they won't interrupt the laser and the disc can be read again.

Don't know how it exactly works, never used one.

In that case it depends how deep the scratch is. If it´s that deep that the laser cannot differ between Pit and Land there will be no way to correct it. If i understand that repair kit it´s nothing more than a polish...

What you need is a Disc Resurface Machine

http://cgi.ebay.com/JFJ-EASY-PRO-CD-DVD-Di...93%3A1|294%3A50

The JFJ EASY PRO machine will clean and resurface anything from a fingerprint to a deep gouge on the following types of discs: Music CDs, CD-ROMs, Sony PlayStation , PSone and PlayStation 2 game discs, Microsoft X-box game discs, Xbox 360 discs , Nintendo Wii discs, DVD Movies, double-sided DVD, VCD, CDR, DVDR, HD DVD, Playstation 3 discs (repairs limited), Blu-Ray (repairs limited) and future Compact Disc based products.

ADVANTAGES:

  • Use as a one step machine for skipping, finger print or light scratches or multi stage for deep scratches and gauges.
  • Light weight, silent motor, safe compounds make the CD or DVD look brand new every time.
  • No water! You do not have to deal with filter, water pump, water hose, or dirty water!
  • Easy to operate.
  • A simple one step is good enough to fix CD's skipping problem and get rid of the most common scratches.
  • Cleaning is not necessary on a daily or weekly basis. Clean the machine whenever you have build up (it could be many months before you will need to clean the machine with a wet towel).
  • Unlike some other products which have a high maintenance, the Easy Pro's maintenance is between 15 to 20 cents per repair.
INCLUDES:

  • JFJ Easy Pro Disc Repair Machine
  • Disc Plate
  • Anti-Static Spray/Cleaner
  • Cleaning Cloth pack
  • JFJ Easy Pro Solution 1 (blue) 4oz
  • JFJ Easy Pro Solution 2 (white) 4oz
  • 2 Sanding Pads
  • 2 Buffing Pads

It's a bit pricey tho.

It´s a (good) polish machine.

Because they work the way that they take away surface of the CD to make it even i would say that it is not long-time healthy for a CD...

yeah but in the long run you'll save your cash. you also offer a service to friends @ m8's r8's say $1.50 or $2.so if they have rare cd that needs fixing they can

You can also buy a bottle of Brasso then put some on teh Cd then rub gently in circular motion, works like a charm!
subliminal aura
yeh i read about that too, though sum1 suggested the style brasso is a bit too strong & cud destroy you cd. i'll try it on a cd i don't like anymore & see if it works.
