Dark Was the Night was never intended to be a be-all compendium of today's indie underground. It wasn't devised as a way to survey a point in music history for future generations to love like the Nuggets compilations or that No Alternative CD from the early '90s. It was just meant as a means for a bunch of bands to help the Red Hot Organization, a nonprofit dedicated to raising funds to help fight the AIDS and HIV. It's not meant to be a defining moment in indie history.
